The Guido family has attended wine growing and wine production since last century. In 1925 our grandparents, with the graft on “American stubs” saved our vineyard from the terrible “filossera vastatrix”. On the sixties, although the progressive abandoning of lands, our father kept on growing and planting vines. Nowadays the rising generation connecting the family tradition with agricultural and oenology studies, could conjugate his experience with most modern processing: soft pressing, refrigeration and crio-maceration.
Our vineyards, located in the highest hills where are produced Gavi and Dolcetto d’Ovada, involve a lot of growing difficulties due to the very accentuated slopes. The hilly conformation of the ground combined with the clayey white soil and the over thirty years old vines make our wines full bodied, intense and aromatic.
From an idea by their children—Natalino, a graduate in oenology and viticulture from the Alba school; Carmen, an accountant and salesperson; and her husband, Luca, an agronomist—LA CAPLANA was founded in 1994 with the aim of further improving quality.
This included new winemaking techniques, such as soft pressing, refrigeration, and cryomaceration; the production of DOC wines such as GAVI, DOLCETTO DI OVADA, and BARBERA D'ASTI; and the introduction of our corporate image, the famous women inspired by Modigliani.
All of this has helped establish LA CAPLANA in new and emerging foreign markets while simultaneously consolidating its presence in the domestic market.
Alice, Luca and Carmen's daughter, a graduate in Viticulture and Oenology, and Lorenzo, the new cellar master who inherited the role from his grandfather Giacinto Bisio, one of Gavi's first winemakers in the 1950s, represent the new generation, supported by the past but always with an eye toward the future.
Following this ideology, we have introduced a production method used since the dawn of winemaking: amphora winemaking, which, combined with modern production techniques, is the first step toward future innovations.
